Our last workshop provided for some free studio time. The result was one of our classmates arranging for a brand new Mitsubishi Lancer to roll into the studio.

As the car was a sleek and shiny black colour, the lighting setup was quite challenging.

Settings in Aperture Priority mode and at ISO 200 were as follows:

Shot 1 - Aperture f/14; shutter speed of 1/3; exposure compensation -0.3; focal length 30mm; white balance - Auto.

Shot 2 – Aperture f/14; shutter speed of 1/2; exposure compensation -0.3; focal length 32mm; white balance - Tungsten.

Here are the results.

Shot 2 -

Comments

As you can see above, there was a dramatic difference between the shots as a result of the white balance settings.

Shot 1 – using Auto white balance - has a warmer reddish hue.

In contrast, shot 2 – with white balance set to Tungsten – has a slightly colder white/grey cast that depicts the car's colour more accurately.

I prefer the tungsten white balance effect in Shot 2; it better suits the look of the car and perhaps the marketing pitch that might go with it. However, with a car of a different colour (or design), the warmer look conveyed by the auto white balance might also be effective.

That just about wraps up all our workshops. Thanks to Reece for conducting the course and thanks also to my colleagues for their participation and feedback.
