Workshop 2 - Shot List

Nine shots were taken with an ISO setting of 200.
I used Aperture Priority mode set to F16.

When I adjusted the Exposure Compensation for each shot, the camera made the following changes to shutter speed:

Shot 1: exposure compensation of -2 gave shutter speed 1/100
Shot 2: exposure compensation of -1 gave shutter speed 1/50
Shot 3: exposure compensation of -0.7 gave shutter speed 1/40
Shot 4: exposure compensation of -0.3 gave shutter speed /30
Shot 5: exposure compensation of 0 gave shutter speed 1/25
Shot 6: exposure compensation of +0.3 gave shutter speed 1/20
Shot 7: exposure compensation of +0.7 gave shutter speed 1/15
Shot 8: exposure compensation of +1 gave shutter speed 1/13
Shot 9: exposure compensation of +2 gave shutter speed 1/6

Here are the resulting images:

I judged optimum exposure to be achieved in shot number 6 (above) in which Exposure Compensation was set to a value of +0.3. Exposure results were also good in shots 4 and 5 with exposure compensation values set to -0.3 and 0 respectively. However, with the compensation value of +3, I found detail visible in the white and black areas (such as the vase handle or shadow under the green block) to be slightly better in shot number 6 compared to shot 5.

The saturation of the color on the Kokak Color Control Patches in the various images was also compared. On this score, shot 6 gave the best result at Exposure Compensation +3.

The point of focus in the scene was the oil painting. Here, shots 5 and 6 produced the best exposures.

Overall, I judged that Exposure Compensation values of 0 or +3 produced the best images, with shot 6 giving a marginally better result at +3. When I looked at the histograms, I also found that shot 6 had a better dynamic range compared to shot 5.

  1. Great post Stephen - very detailed analysis of both detail and colour saturation. See if you generally prefer +0.3 exp comp as a standard setting over the next few weeks.

BTW - I checked out some of the sites you note and really like the BLDGBLG one - I ended up spending a fair bit of time Google Earth touring the high desert in California, even retracing a drive I did from San Diego, past the Salton Sea and Yuma before heading back to San Diego. Thanks for the links!

    cheers, reece :-)
